Tethered Balloon Rides

Tethered balloon rides are offered to the public on Saturday morning of the rally, weather permitting. These tether rides are sponsored by WELLS FARGO BANK, and occur in the Wells Fargo Bank corporate balloons. Typically, two balloons will be set up for tethered rides. The tethered rides are scheduled to begin at about 8:00 a.m. The lines are usually long for the rides, but worth the wait. This year, a single line will be used for both balloons. LOOK FOR THE TETHER BALLOON RIDE signs to enter the queue (line). A $1.00 donation is asked for each person taking a ride. The funds collected for tethered balloon rides are then donated to local charities, such as the soup kitchen, cancer support group, and the Branigan Library.

Some notes about tethered balloon rides

Tethering a balloon means that the balloon is anchored. To do this, ropes, or tether lines are run from the balloon itself to at least three fixed points. Generally, heavy vehicles such as 4x4 trucks or cars with trailer hitches are used.

A tethered ride gives participants a chance to experience what an actual flight would be like while being securely tied to the ground. Tethered balloons typically go about 100 feet into the air, giving a truly unique view of the surrounding area.

For safe operation, the balloon requires a circular area of at least 200 feet in diameter which is clear of power lines, light standards, trees, people (except those operating the tether or currently taking a ride), and other obstructions which may impede safe operation.
